Yangshuo Bike Festival 2017
Ride the limestone mountains and the luscious green rice paddies of Yangshuo with a DJ curated sound track. Silent disco on a bike is now a signature event, dubbed as the Disco de Wheels with tunes DJ’d through wireless headphones to enhance this entrancing landscape.
On this weekend long ride, we”ll feast on seasonal delights cooked up by farming friends. Three rivers – The Li, Jin Bao and Yulong become riverine bars as we cool down at the end of each day with a swim and a beer.
Music is added at every opportunity – a local Zither player to help the G&T’s go down; rock bands in our farmhouse venue; acoustic guitar under the pomelo trees, Erhu with tea under a banyon tree.
Where does this completely original event take place?
Yangshuo Town is the start of the disco ride. We cycle through the mountain corralled rice fields of the Yulong Valley, along the river then down a secret back way through mixed orchards and stunning limestone karst country to Gaotian Village.
And what about food?
Its all around you. We’ll be cycling through it – and then dining on fresh produce – delicious sour plum duck, roasted ribs, fresh garden vegetables, stir fried tofu skins – at the open verandah restaurant of Valle Luna. Terry Li – the Chef – is an incredible cook, a master of the sweet pickled chilli sour flours that make up the regional cuisines. The duck is out of this world.
Price: 2800 RMB includes two nights twin share accommodation, two days quality bike hire, the Disco de Wheels, Sunday morning slow food discovery ride, 2 x breakfast, 2 x lunch 1 dinner, luggage transfers, and Friday night pick up from Guilin airport or Gongcheng train station. Its a bargain! We supply music through wireless headphone sets on an off the beaten track guided and supported ride, live band, T-shirt and more.
Valle Luna Village
To stay at this renovated village in Gaotian is something very special. To be there with the man – Terry Li – who brought it back from the slurry of dilapidation is a bonus. To make the most of this fabulous venue we will be holding a rice wine cocktail party, an interactive farmers feast, and an out door live music and a village cinema screening. Those on the full package get to experience one of Terry’s renovated guesthouse rooms firsthand ( the best ones), and a breakfast where he recounts the history of the project. The full package also includes a Sunday ride through more of Yangshuo’s historic villages and another lunchtime feast in a beautiful countryside setting.
The Ride
The Yulong is a broad valley of rice paddie, gardens and orchards jammed between Yangshuo’s most beautiful limestone karsts centred upon the phoenix-tail bamboo lined the Jade Dragon (Yulong) River.
Getting there and away
Guilin is the closest airport. It is then a 90 minute transfer by taxi to Yangshuo. Gongcheng Train station is only one hour from Yangshuo with trains arriving from Shenzhen and Guangzhou in approximately 2 – 2.5 hours. The even newer Yangshuo station is the best option and only forty minutes away.
The trip finishes after lunch at 3pm on the Sunday, allowing time for transfers (1.5 hours) to Guilin airport / (40 mins) to Yanghsuo train station — though the festival will continue with post-ride beers in the Pomello Garden at Jiuxian for those who want to stay on.
